The Rainforest Alliance
About: “The Rainforest Alliance is creating a more sustainable world by using social and market forces to protect nature and improve the lives of farmers and forest communities. Instead of protecting nature from people, [their] alliance works to restore the balance between people and nature so they both thrive in harmony. [The Rainforest Alliance is] an alliance of people who pledge to take action. [They] do this because [they] want to shift markets toward being net positive for people and nature."
The Rainforest Alliance has significantly advanced global sustainability by certifying over 5 million hectares of land in Latin America and training over 2 million farmers in sustainable practices. They pioneered forest certification (FSC), helped achieve near-zero deforestation in key areas like the Maya Biosphere Reserve for 14 years, and secured net-zero commitments from ~1,500 companies.
Key accomplishments include:
- Sustainable Agriculture & Certification:Â The Rainforest Alliance certified label is used on over 44,000 products across 170+ countries. They focus on high-risk crops like cocoa, coffee, and bananas to promote biodiversity and improve livelihoods.
- Forest Conservation: As a founder of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), they have been leaders in responsible forestry. In Guatemala’s Maya Biosphere Reserve, they helped community-run concessions maintain near-zero deforestation for 14 years.
- Climate & Community Resilience:Â Their work includes training in climate-smart agriculture and promoting agroforestry, such as planting 45,000 trees in Indonesian wildlife corridors and enabling year-round river flow in Ghana through reforestation.
- Corporate and Social Impact: They have driven major corporations toward more sustainable supply chains and empowered rural communities—including training Indigenous women in Mexico to develop sustainable businesses.Â
