American Civil Liberties Union

About: The ACLU is committed to fight for freedom and the protection of constitutional rights for generations to come. With more than 1.1 million members, 500 staff attorneys, thousands of volunteer attorneys, and offices throughout the nation, the ACLU of today continues to fight government abuse and to vigorously defend individual freedoms including speech and religion, a woman’s right to choose, the right to due process, citizens’ rights to privacy and much more. The ACLU stands up for these rights even when the cause is unpopular, and sometimes when nobody else will. While not always in agreement with us on every issue, Americans have come to count on the ACLU for its unyielding dedication to principle. The ACLU has become so ingrained in American society that it is hard to imagine an America without it.ACLU works on Democracy: Free Speech, Human Rights, Immigrants' Rights, National Security, Privacy & Technology, Voting RightsLiberty: Disability Rights, LGBTQ Rights, Religious Liberty, Reproductive Freedom, Women's Rights Justice: Capital Punishment, Criminal Law Reform, Juvenile Justice, Prisoners' Rights, Racial Justice, Smart Justice.

Key Accomplishments:

LGBTQ+ Rights: Achieved the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) ruling, making same-sex marriage legal nationwide, and struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 2013.

  • Reproductive Freedom: Acts as a leading defender of abortion access and contraception, blocking hundreds of restrictive state laws.
  • Voting Rights & Democracy: Fought against voter suppression, including overturning strict voter ID laws in PA and AR.
  • Free Speech: Historically defended the First Amendment rights of all.
  • Racial Justice: Instrumental in the desegregation case Brown v. Board of Education and continues fighting to end mass incarceration and the school-to-prison pipeline.
  • Due Process & Civil Rights: Established specific rights for juveniles in In re Gault and challenges government overreach regarding surveillance, discrimination, and the death penalty.
  • Anti-Administration Legal Action: The ACLU has filed hundreds of lawsuits against federal administrations to protect civil liberties, with significant success in delaying or blocking policies on immigration and civil rights.

IN REGARDS TO ICE: The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) advocates for victims of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through strategic litigation, policy advocacy, and community organizing. Key accomplishments include filing class-action lawsuits against unlawful, suspicionless stops and detention, obtaining documents regarding detention expansion, and exposing abuses in detention centers, such as physical and sexual assault.

Key accomplishments:

  • Strategic Litigation: The ACLU has filed numerous lawsuits challenging unconstitutional practices, such as suing the government over racial profiling and illegal arrests of immigrants. They secured a significant, though, in a case regarding unlawful detention based on ICE detainers.
  • Investigative Advocacy & Reports: The organization exposed inhumane conditions and abuses at detention centers, including reports of assaults at the Fort Bliss facility, and has demanded accountability for deaths in custody resulting from substandard care.
  • Community Empowerment: The "We Have Rights" campaign provides multilingual, accessible resources for communities to understand their rights when interacting with ICE, offering actionable steps for defense.
  • Policy and Legislative Pressure: The ACLU mobilizes public opposition, such as generating hundreds of thousands of messages to Congress to block increased, non-accountable funding for ICE detention.
  • Direct Action: They work to protect immigrants from illegal, warrantless searches and have pushed for the termination of contracts with private prison companies that contribute to mass detention.
